The Cebu Bridge, built by ACCIONA, recognized at the Philippine Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards
The cable-stayed Cebu bridge (CCLEX), built by ACCIONA in the Philippines, has been awarded in the Philippine Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards (PECCA) 2024, organized between the American Concrete Institute – Philippines Chapter and the Philippine Constructors Association.
The objective of these awards is to recognize outstanding concrete projects in the Philippines that celebrate innovation and technology and inspire excellence throughout the global concrete design and construction community.
The Cebu bridge project, a standout in the bridge category, has been honored with the Overall Award for its outstanding achievement, becoming a testament to cutting-edge technology and forward-thinking design, and representing the pinnacle of concrete construction in the Philippines.
In the project, ACCIONA and its partners used a sustainable concrete with a lower CO2 footprint, which also ensured greater durability and thus increased the useful life of the bridge. In addition, they used local materials in the production of the concrete mixes, which had a significant positive impact on the local economy.
The awards ceremony was held at the Best Western Plus Metro Clark (Pampanga), during the Industry Night. This award recognizes the commitment of ACCIONA and its partners to achieve excellence in the project, reaffirming their position as leaders in the construction sector and in the use of concrete.
In addition, the Cebu bridge is set to represent the Philippines in the Bridges category at the upcoming ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards on November 4, 2024.
THE PROJECT
The project, awarded by the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway Corporation (CCLEC), a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), consisted of the design and construction of a 650-meter-long cable-stayed bridge, the longest one in the Philippines, with a central span of 390 meters between the pylons. It also included the construction of several viaducts, as well as a 5.2-kilometer-long roadway section over an embankment.
Due to the technical and logistical complexity of the construction, a large part of the works was carried out with ACCIONA’s own means, of the company’s own design. An example of this is the beam launcher manufactured by the company, which has been key to the construction of the access to the main bridge.
In total, more than 150,000m3 of concrete, 31,000 tonnes of grade 75 steel and 965 tonnes of active steel were used for the bridge stays and post-tensioning. About 2,500 direct and indirect jobs have been created for the construction of the bridge.
The bridge was inaugurated in April 2022 and its opening has brought numerous benefits to traffic management in the area, relieving the congestion that existed on the other bridges by connecting Cebu City – the Philippines’ most important economic and commercial center after its capital, Manila – to the island of Mactan via Cordova.
