Forging new ground in PH construction
The Mactan Cebu international airport terminal 2 by Megawide construction corporation bagged the infrastructure top plum, while the Paranaque integrated terminal exchange, also by Megawide, won the decorative concrete category, at the first Philippine excellence in concrete construction awards held recently by the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA).
The competition, held together with the American Concrete Institute Philippines Chapter, dovetailed with the Philippine construction industry roadmap 2020-2030 that had adopted as its theme, “Tatag at Tapat”, or building with integrity.
“The awards highlights and celebrates Philippine excellence as we build a better tomorrow and be global partners in building nations,” said Anthony Mariano, PCA foundation program director. “
Opening the door to excellence
“We have opened the doors towards excellence” explained PCA president Wilfredo Decena during the awarding program. “The amazing details brought me to realize that we can really compete globally, no if and no buts, even the pandemic cannot hinder us to excel.”.
The winners for the different categories include the Infinity House by Carlo CaIma consultancy for low-rise building; the SM 4 ECOM Center by EEI Corporation for mid-rise building; and the ATG Towers 2 by the Makati Development Corporation for high-rise Building.
The Wilcon Builders Depot by J Vazco Inc was awarded for horizontal construction.
DMCI Project Developers received a nod for its work on the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice Chapel in the University of the Philippines for the repair and restoration category. The company was the overall winner, as well, of the Philippine excellence in concrete construction award, for the same project.
The winners of the 2021 Philippine excellence in concrete construction awards will compete at the upcoming 2021 American Concrete Institute’s excellence in construction awards in the US next month.
Industry growth, competitiveness
In 2019, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines, in partnership with the PCA, launched the 10-year roadmap as a strategic framework for the growth and development of the industry – which employs some 4.2 million workers or 10 percent of the total Filipino workforce.
While the construction industry has been growing at an average of 10 percent for the last 5 years, and was the fastest among all sectors, the industry, especially the small and medium sized construction companies and its workers, have been badly hit by the on-going pandemic.
