ILOILO CITY – Iloilo City is a recipient of drainage and road projects worth over PHP92 million, implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo City District Engineering Office.
The first project is the PHP49.4 million drainage system along JM Basa and Iznart Streets, with the rehabilitation of the Plazoleta Gay, provision of curb and cutter, and application of thermoplastic pavement markings as components.
“It’s a two-sided drainage, but currently ongoing is the left side going to the capitol. The physical accomplishment as of date is 15.71 percent,” supervising project engineer Dave Belarga said during a media conference on Tuesday.
The project will accommodate water coming from Iznart Street going to the box culvert at Guanco Street, with an outfall at the Iloilo River.
He added that they will be fast-tracking the project to complete the left side, and temporarily stop on the second week of December to give way to the celebration of Christmas and Dinagyang Festival and Chinese New Year in January.
“As to date, since our work is only 327 meters, we already laid almost 104 meters, which is 30 percent. By the second week of December, it is already open to traffic,” Belarga said.
Another project is the construction of the Jalandoni Road leading to some of the city’s destinations, including the Nelly Garden, Jaro Cathedral, and Esplanade, worth PHP43.4 million.
The project components include the preparation of the 654-meter two-lane concrete pavement from the junction of E. Lopez and Jalandoni Street going to Bolilao, with a box culvert, drainage, and slope protection structures.
“The purpose of this project is to drain the area of Jaro and La Paz. So, this is Phase 1 of the project going to the pumping station that is implemented by the regional office,” DPWH engineer Aljun Cerbo said.
Traffic and Transportation Management Office’s transportation head Uldarico Garbanzos said project contractors are compliant with their recommendations, while road closures and rerouting are implemented in areas affected by the projects.
