Bataan explores engineered bamboo for future construction projects

Bataan is exploring the use of engineered bamboo in construction through a new Bamboo Building Lab that brought together government officials, architects, designers and other stakeholders to examine the material’s potential applications.

The initiative, organized by Bataan 3rd District Representative Gila Garcia, featured the Rizome team led by President and Chief Executive Officer Russell Smith. The presentation was held at The Bunker at the Capitol.

Among those who attended were Rolly Rojas, chief of staff of Garcia; Bataan Vice Governor Cris Garcia; Board Member Angel Sunga; and representatives from the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, tourism sector, professional associations, architects and designers.

The Bamboo Building Lab was presented as a venue for examining engineered bamboo technology and its possible use in structural, architectural and development projects. Rizome has been developing engineered bamboo materials for construction and other applications, with operations in the Philippines.

The discussions included potential applications in tourism facilities, public infrastructure, commercial developments and other projects in Bataan and elsewhere in Central Luzon.

The gathering also brought together engineers, architects, government regulators and tourism stakeholders whose technical and regulatory input would be needed in assessing whether engineered bamboo could be adopted for local projects.

The initiative marks an initial step in examining bamboo not only as a traditional material, but also as an engineered product that could form part of future construction and development projects in Bataan.
