THE wholesale price of construction materials in Metro Manila continued to rise in June, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) rose by 2.9 percent in June, slightly faster than the 2.8 percent posted in May and a sharp increase from the 0.2-percent growth recorded in the same month last year.

The latest reading extended the steady pickup in construction material inflation from 0.9 percent in January, bringing the year-to-date average to 1.8 percent.

The PSA attributed the faster increase in wholesale construction material prices mainly to structural steel, whose annual price growth more than doubled to 3.7 percent in June from 1.6 percent in May.

Other key construction inputs also posted faster annual price increases.

Cement accelerated to 1.2 percent from 0.2 percent, while electrical works rose to 2.9 percent from 1.9 percent, and painting works climbed to 5.3 percent from 3.8 percent.

Annual price growth, likewise, picked up for sand and gravel (3.3 percent from 3.1 percent), hardware (0.6 percent from 0.1 percent), lumber (1.5 percent from 1.1 percent), G.I. sheet (0.6 percent from 0.5 percent), reinforcing steel (2.3 percent from 2.1 percent), and plumbing fixtures and accessories or waterworks (0.9 percent from 0.5 percent).

Meanwhile, plywood and PVC pipes reversed their declines in June, posting annual increases of 0.4 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively, after contracting by 0.1 percent and 0.2 percent in May.

Metal products and glass and glass products also recovered, with both posting flat annual growth after recording declines of 0.1 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively, in the previous month.

Not all commodity groups saw faster price growth, the PSA also noted.

Inflation eased for concrete products to 4.1 percent from 4.5 percent; doors, jambs and steel casement to 0.3 percent from 0.5 percent; and fuels and lubricants to 6.4 percent from 7.8 percent.

The annual growth rates for tileworks, asphalt, and machinery and equipment rental were unchanged from May.
