AboitizPower hybridises 49-MW BESS with oil-fired floating plant in Philippines

Philippine power company Aboitiz Power Corp (PSE:AP) said it has recently started the installation of a 49-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at its floating oil-fired plant in Mindanao.

The project will hybridise the battery with the Therma Marine Mobile 1 barge-mounted floating power plant that the company has in the Philippine municipality of Maco. The oil-fired plant is one of two 100-MW power barges run by AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Marine Inc (TMI).

Finnish technology group Wartsila Corp (HEL:WRT1V) is participating in the installation process alongside Aboitiz Construction.

Once live, the TMI battery will support the grid in Mindanao, especially in the summer when the island deals with limited hydropower output due to lower water levels, AboitizPower explained.

The TMI BESS project represents the company’s first step in the battery market. It is also one of 12 BESS projects that AboitizPower wants to develop in the next ten years, targeting a total of 248 MW for regulating and contingency reserves. The company said that its strategy for the next decade will also revolve around renewables.
