Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by Strengthening Domestic Resource Mobilization and International Tax Cooperation
Thursday, 17 September 2020, 9:00 am–10:30 am, GMT+8
ADB’s developing member countries (DMCs) are facing increasing pressure to raise tax revenues, especially with the introduction of tax policy relief measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Given its longstanding collaboration with DMCs and development partners, ADB is in a unique position to promote domestic resource mobilization (DRM) and international tax cooperation (ITC) in supporting greater revenue efforts. In this session, ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa will discuss with DMC and development partner representatives how their collaborative efforts can help address challenges that the region faces in DRM and ITC. President Asakawa will also present ADB’s Vision and Action Plan, including the establishment of a DRM and ITC regional hub.
Joint Ministers of Finance and Health Symposium on Universal Health Coverage in Asia and the Pacific: COVID-19 and Beyond
Thursday, 17 September 2020, 11:00 am–12:35 pm, GMT+8
Countries in Asia and the Pacific have made great strides in poverty reduction and economic growth in the last 50 years. However, unfinished development agendas remain, including the need to further improve health outcomes and attain and sustain universal health coverage (UHC). The current coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has an unprecedented impact on all facets of society, resulting in the tragic loss of life, livelihood, and economic progress. In the midst of the pandemic, countries must take urgent action to scale up effective approaches to achieve UHC, so that all people can access quality health services to improve health without experiencing unnecessary financial hardship. ADB, the Government of Japan, and the World Health Organization (WHO) are jointly hosting this seminar, bringing together finance and health ministers to discuss accelerating progress toward UHC in Asia and the Pacific in the new COVID-19 era.
Regional Cooperation in the time of COVID-19: Lessons Learned and Way Forward Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program
Thursday, 17 September 2020, 3:00 pm–5:00 pm, GMT+8
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has brought global and regional economies to a standstill. Its health and socioeconomic impacts are being strongly felt across the world. Countries in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) region are no different. This high-level session will reflect on lessons learned from the historical silk road about regional cooperation, especially during crisis times. It aims to highlight the benefits of regional cooperation in reviving and fostering economic growth in a post-COVID environment. The session will also discuss the potential role of regional cooperation platforms, such as CAREC, in building countries’ resilience to future crisis, and how countries can use and adapt these platforms for their mutual benefit.
